About Afua Richardson
Afua Richardson [pronounced Uh-FOO-wah] is an American illustrator and creator who made history in 2007 as one of the first Indigenous Afro-American female artists to work for Marvel Comics. As a penciler, inker, and colorist, she has earned the prestigious Nina Simone Award for artistic excellence. Afua is best known for her work on the Eisner Award-winning series Black Panther: World of Wakanda, which featured the first Black female writer-artist team at Marvel. Her contributions to this graphic novel introduced African philosophical symbolism that influenced the three-time Academy Award-winning blockbuster film, as well as story elements that provided the basis for the sequel.
Beyond her achievements in comics, Afua is a Julliard-trained classical flutist, singer, songwriter, and world-traveled vocalist and performer. Her artistic talent extends to the big screen, with contributions to films such as HBO’s Lovecraft Country, The Dark Phoenix, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Afua is also the creator of the upcoming series Aquarius: The Book of Mer. Through all her works and accomplishments, she remains dedicated to mentoring and guiding future artists to achieve beyond their expectations.
