About Visual Arts Passage

Drawing Hive is just the beginning.

Visual Arts Passage is an online art school where illustrators and fine artists learn from working professionals through live mentorship. Our classes are small, critique is real, and the community sticks around long after the course ends.

Drawing Hive keeps the door open every week. But if you're ready for structure, accountability, and serious growth, our mentorship courses have you covered.

Drawing Hive FAQ

Questions about drawing with us.

Figure drawing is the practice of drawing the human body from observation. It's foundational to almost every visual discipline, from illustration and animation to fine art and concept design. Drawing Hive gives you weekly practice with curated reference images and guidance from working professionals.
Consistent practice with quality reference images and feedback from experienced artists. Drawing Hive provides both: curated poses every week and live guidance from professional illustrators and fine artists who can answer your questions in real time.
Gesture drawing captures the movement and energy of a pose in quick sketches, usually 30 seconds to 2 minutes. Figure drawing takes more time to develop anatomy, proportion, and detail. At Drawing Hive, we spend 20+ minutes per image so you can work beyond gesture into fuller studies.
No. Drawing Hive welcomes artists at every level. Many attendees are just starting out, while others are working professionals looking for consistent practice. The format is low-pressure and you can participate as much or as little as you want.
Whatever you have. Pencil and paper works. So does a tablet and Procreate. Some attendees use charcoal, some use ballpoint pen. The medium doesn't matter. The practice does.
We dedicate 20+ minutes to each image, giving you enough time to develop a full sketch rather than just gesture work.
Yes. Drawing Hive is completely free. Every Thursday at 4pm PT (7pm ET), we host a live figure drawing session with curated reference images and professional artists guiding the session. Just register and show up.
Draw from life or photo reference regularly, study the underlying skeletal and muscular structure, and get feedback from experienced artists. Drawing Hive combines all three: weekly practice with curated references, discussion of anatomical landmarks during the session, and access to professional artists who can answer your questions.
Every Thursday at 4pm PT (7pm ET). If you miss the livestream, you can catch almost all of our episodes on-demand on YouTube.
All users must register in advance to attend the livestream webinar, hosted using Zoom. If you haven't registered, you can do so here.
No problem. Re-register here and we'll send you a new link.
The photo reference is posted above, in the episode section. It changes every week and is updated 1 to 2 hours before the livestream.
No. Participants do not have audio or video capabilities. You're invited to use the chat, ask questions, and share your drawings with us on Discord.
Share your art with us on Discord. We feature community work throughout the show and love seeing what everyone creates.
Drawing Hive is part podcast, part classroom, and part workshop. Each episode we invite a handful of our favorite artists to chat with us about their lives, careers, and sometimes just their favorite documentary they just watched. Our favorite part is answering audience questions about the tools of the trade, industry insights, and sharing career wisdom.
Drawing Hive is all ages-friendly and invites artists of all skill levels to join and draw along. Whether you are a total beginner, just getting started with drawing, or a working professional illustrator, you're welcome to join in the fun and share your work with us.
Almost all of our episodes are available on YouTube. Subscribe so you don't miss new uploads.
We started Illustration Isolation in 2020 during the start of the pandemic to give our art community something to rally behind while we were all holed up in our homes. A lot has changed since then and we never thought our community would grow to what it is today. We decided to change the name to something that is more in the spirit of the energy our community brings together every Thursday, so we chose 'Drawing Hive'.
