LEARN COVER ART FROM A GROUNDBREAKING INDUSTRY LEADER.

The Art of the Cover delves into the complex nature of successfully developing thought-provoking and visually compelling cover art in the entertainment and publishing industry. You will learn from an internationally acclaimed cover artist as he explains the challenging balance of visually communicating an assigned narrative and also capturing the essence of the story, without compromising either elements. 

This industry-inspired workshop will go into great detail explaining what makes successful cover art. Foster will describe the functions and the unique challenges involved with developing cover art for assigned projects in the editorial and entertainment industry. All students will complete a cover art concept for one of three novels selected by Jon Foster. This assignment will be loosely based on several examples of assignments Jon has completed in the past This 3-part workshop is 9 hours of recorded content. The workshop is available for streaming for up to 1 year after purchase.

THE ASSIGNMENT

Students will learn about the entire process of a cover art assignment, from ideation to finish. Jon provides further explanation of process.

DEMONSTRATION

The workshop includes a detailed digital demonstration completed by the acclaimed illustrator.

CRITIQUE

Jon Foster and John English critique and complete paint-overs to articulate suggestions to the live-session students. Your work is not critiqued.

Session 1

LECTURE & ASSIGNMENT

  • Presentation of Jon Foster's work.
  • Lecture on Jon's working process.
  • Students receive an assignment and demonstration on how to proceed.

Session 2

GUIDANCE & DEMO

  • Learn from previous students' projects as Foster critiques their work. 
  • A digital demonstration by Foster.

Session 3

REVIEW & CRITIQUE

  • Review and critique finished assignment.
  • The critique process is an extremely valuable element of the learning process.
  • On-demand attendees do not receive a critique.
 
 

Meet Jon Foster

Jon's work has appeared in publications such as National Geographic, Universal Orlando, Dark Horse Comics, DC Comics, Tor Books, Simon and Schuster, Harry S. Abrams Books, Boston Globe, Underwood Books, Knopf, Delacorte, Del Rey Books, Scholastic, Fox Atomic, Little Brown, Nightshade Books, Subterranean Press.

In addition to his inclusion in the Society of Illustrators annual publication, he has received two silver and three gold awards from Spectrum: The Best of Contemporary Fantastic Art.  Jon also was awarded the David P. Usher/Greenwich Workshop Memorial Award in the Society of Illustrators: Annual 43, has been nominated twice for the Chesley Awards, and was winner of the 2008 Dark Scribe Quill Award for Best Cover. Jon Foster has been a long time friend of the Illustration Academy and has also taught at our on-ground workshop.
